About Us

Central Georgia Genealogical Society was formed in 1978 and is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3). The Society is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of elected and appointed officers and four elected Directors.

                                                                  

CGGS Area of Interest

Twenty-seven counties in central Georgia:

Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Crawford, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Houston, Johnson, Jones, Lamar, Laurens, 

Macon, Monroe, Montgomery, Peach, Pike, Pulaski, Taylor, Telfair, Treutlen, Twiggs, Upson, Washington, Wheeler, Wilcox, and Wilkinson.

Purpose

  • To collect, preserve and disseminate knowledge and information with reference to genealogical and related historical, biographical and heraldic data
  • To inculcate and promote interest in research in these fields
  • To stimulate and provide instruction in the use of efficient methods and the adherence to principles of accuracy and thoroughness in research
  • To champion ethical standards and to discourage and oppose incompetent and disreputable practices or researchers
  • To foster careful documentation and otherwise promote scholarly writing
  • To issue publications
  • To promote the collection and the preservation of local records which are of genealogical or historical value.
  • To support the regional genealogical community through an annual monetary gift to the Genealogical and Historical Room of the Washington Memorial Library in Macon, Georgia.

Georgia Pioneer Program

WAS YOUR ANCESTOR IN GEORGIA BEFORE JAN 1, 1826?

If so, we encourage you to submit your lineage to the Georgia Pioneer Program.


In partnership with Washington Memorial Library Historical and Genealogical Room in Macon, Georgia, we receive and review applications for the Georgia Pioneer Program.  Once approved, lineages are maintained at Washington Memorial Library.


  1. Is the Georgia Pioneer program only for members?  No, anyone with a qualifying ancestor may submit an application.
  2. How do I get an application?  Contact CGGS at info@cggs.org   Include Subject line REQUEST FOR GA PIONEER APPLICATION.  We will send you an application with  all instructions including Rules of Evidence.
  3. Is there a cost?  Yes, the fee is $10 for each ancestor you are seeking a certificate for.  A check made payable to CGGS should be submitted along with your completed application.
  4. What happens after I submit my application?  The application is reviewed by experienced committee members and if approved, a certificate is issued to the Georgia Pioneer Descendant.
